Moderator
Gen Merritt-Parikh, President, Haversine Funding. With more than 25 years of experience in commercial finance, Gen is responsible for originations, underwriting, investment analysis, and management and asset allocation strategy. In 2018, as President of Allied Affiliated Funding, she led the company to a successful sale to a nationally chartered bank. Previously, Gen worked in the factoring and asset-based lending space with companies including Liquid Capital, Comresco Capital and Guaranty Business Credit. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Economics from the University of Texas at Dallas, serves on the Factoring Committee for the Secured Finance Network (SFNet) and holds the Subject Matter Expert designation by the International Factoring Association, having helped develop the first factoring certification program for the industry. She was recognized by the ABF Journal as one of the top women in ABL for 2022 and by SFNet in 2019 as one of the noted women in commercial finance. 

Panelists
Dan Avnir, Managing Director, Encina Capital. Dan’s career includes 20+ years of investment banking and corporate finance experience where he has held various leadership roles in business development, capital markets, and operations. Prior to joining Encina Lender Finance, Dan spent 11+ years as a Managing Director at Bryant Park Capital where he focused on M&A and Capital Raising advisory and was responsible for originating, executing, and structuring transactions for specialty finance companies. Earlier in his career, Dan held numerous investment banking positions at other boutique banks and was a consultant for Affiliated Computer Services. As part of Dan’s notable experience, he built a 200-home community in Guarai, Brazil through Habitat for Humanity.

Jim Johnson, Managing Director, Cadence Business Finance. Jim’s career includes 40+ years of banking, asset-based lending and factoring experience where he has held various leadership roles in business development, credit management, underwriting, and operations. Prior to joining Cadence Business Finance, he spent 25+ years starting and growing two asset-based lending companies, Marquette Business Credit and Guaranty Business Credit. Earlier in his career, Jim held several positions in banking, asset-based lending, and factoring. He has had a diverse career focused on lending to middle market companies during growth and turnaround phases with relevant experience lending to companies in many industries, including growing financial companies.    

Bruce Sim, Head of Acquisitions, eCapital. Bruce is responsible for sourcing commercial finance platform companies and portfolios across North America, and the UK. He has more than three decades of experience in commercial finance, banking, and capital markets. Prior to joining eCapital, Bruce served as senior director of business development at ExWorks Capital, and senior managing director for Glass Ratner Advisory & Capital Group. His banking experience includes executive roles as Head of Capital Markets and Wealth Management at RBC (Caribbean) Ltd, a subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada; Head of Wells Fargo Global Banking in Miami; and Southeast Region Manager for asset-based lending at Wells Fargo. Sim earned his Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) from the University of Toronto and a Master of Business Administration from York University in Canada.

Tim Stute, Managing Director & Head of Specialty Finance, Hovde Group. Tim is based in the firm’s McLean, Virginia office, where he manages the top ranked M&A practice to the commercial finance sector (according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, 2019 through YTD 2022). Prior to joining Hovde, he was a member of Houlihan Lokey’s Financial Institutions Group. He has nearly 20 years of experience providing capital markets and M&A advisory services to the financial institutions sector, with a particular emphasis on the specialty finance industry, including equipment leasing companies, asset-based lenders, accounts receivable factoring companies, and non-mortgage consumer lenders. Before joining Houlihan Lokey, Mr. Stute was a Managing Director and Principal at Milestone Advisors, LLC in Washington, D.C., which was acquired by Houlihan Lokey in 2012. While at Houlihan Lokey, and previously at Milestone Advisors, Stute was a top ranked senior banker in the specialty finance M&A sector, as measured by number of deals (according to SNL Financial LC, 2004 to 2016). Prior to joining Milestone in 2001, Mr. Stute was an Associate in the Financial Institutions Group of First Union Securities, Inc. (now Wells Fargo Securities, Inc.) in Charlotte, N.C.
